About the course
Novosibirsk State University and A.A. Trofimuk Institute of Petroleum Geology and Geophysics Siberian Branch RAS are pleased to announce joint Arctic summer school at Samoylov Island in the delta of Lena River.

The aim of this summer school is to expose students of various backgrounds, including geoscience, ecology, climatology, biology, archeology, meteorology, engineering to the basics of geoscience field methods, including geological, pedological, and geobotanical observation methods in Arctic climatic and geographical conditions. The school participants will also get knowledge about Quaternary geology, geomorphology, geobotany, pedology, and geocryology of the Arctic.

Special attention is given to observations of geocryological and sedimentological properties of the Lena Delta quaternary sediments, tundra vegetation cover, and arctic soils. Students will also study the geomorphology of periglacial landscapes, get skills for description of unconsolidated sedimentary rocks and for mapping of landforms.
The program consists of four study modules:
-1-
Quaternary geology: studying unconsolidated sedimentary rocks; reconstructing Lena Delta Quaternary events based on observation and analysis of deposits
-2-
Geomorphology: observation and description of typical accumulative and erosional periglacial landforms; revealing differences between various geomorphological surfaces using field observations, topographic maps, and Earth surface satellite images
-3-
Geocryology: recognizing and describing various types of ground ice
-4-
Geobotany and pedology: field observing of vegetation cover and soils, revealing their correlation with study area geology and geomorphology, as well as familiarization with botanical and pedological laboratory research methods
Program
The summer school program starts in Novosibirsk, where school participants arrive independently and are welcomed by the International Students Department of Novosibirsk State University that organizes welcoming and orientation program for them. School participants get familiar with Novosibirsk State University and Novosibirsk Scientific Centre, city tour can be organized upon request.

On 18th of July participants depart by plane to Yakutsk -the capital city of Sakha Republic, where they take boat to Samoilov Island. Upon the completion of the field training they take boat back to Yakutsk and depart home.

The Lena Delta is the largest delta in the Arctic and one of the largest river deltas in the World. Most of the delta's islands are characterized by unique sedimentation history, permafrost presence, and neotectonic activity during the late Quaternary. These factors made the Lena Delta a unique place for field training.

In the southern part of the delta, students will observe outcrops of Palaeozoic rocks deformed in the Mesozoic represented there as part of the Verkhoyansk fold-and-thrust belt. They are located on Kharaulakh Ridge, northern Kurungnakh Island, and Stolb Island. Also, students will study unique types of periglacial landforms and their relationship with vegetation cover and soils.

The summer school is based at the Research station of the A.A. Trofimuk Institute of Petroleum Geology and Geophysics Siberian Branch Russian Academy of Science.
