At the beginning of XXI century Siberia attracted substantial interest of authors. The Region's significance in the prospects for the whole development of Russia made the study of its historical experience extremely important. Since the late 1980s historical Siberian studies have been going through a transitional phase during which new concepts, methods and approaches have been proposed.
Students will analyze and compare two main concepts of Siberian history:
1) settlement of the region deemed as Russianization or Europeanization;
2) focus on unique characteristics of the territory that changed the earlier way of life and created a new geographical, economic and cultural environment (theories of "frontier", Eurasianism, "heartland" etc.).
This module consists of two lectures covering a wide range of issues related to the contemporary Siberian studies:
- major centers of research and sources on Siberian history in Russia and in the West;
- key concepts of Siberian history;
- basic issues (problems, topics) addressed by the researchers on Siberian history;
- historical experience and the future of Siberia as a part of Russia.
The module will introduce students to a poorly-known area of study and will help them to acquire new historic and historiographic skills, methods and approaches.
